RILEY

“Was that who I think it was?”

Damon Constantinis glanced at Chad Riley. “It is. Something must have gone wrong if Stephen has broken radio silence.”

Chad emptied out the last of the coffee in the paper cup into his mouth. “Yeah. It’s all over the screen.”

Then he waved the empty cup at the big screens showing the carnage unfolding on the streets of Istanbul. He could barely see most of it because of the smoke from the burning armored vehicle in the middle of the column. He recognized it as a newer model MRAP. A mine resistant ambush protected vehicle designed specifically for urban fighting. It was all bulky armor plating and two-inch thick windows with massive tractor tires holding it high up off the ground. Perfect for protecting its occupants from mines or guys on the side of road shooting at it.

Only this time it wasn’t those threats that took it out. Riley’s empty cup was pointing at a screen with a handful of miniature drone helicopters cruising over the rooftops toward the battle. “Those things are laying the smack down.”

In the headset Chad heard the voice of Stephen reading down the list of a nine-line CASEVAC request. Someone was hurt bad down there and he was trying to get that someone airlifted out to a hospital.

Remy Robert, their comms expert, entered the gloomy dimness of the ops center and took up a position between Chad and Damon. “I came as soon as I could. Is something wrong?”

Damon nodded at the big screens showing the battle from multiple angles. “Stephen and Lado broke radio silence early.”

It was a lot of words to say “Yes”.

Remy acknowledged with a silent nod of his head. “Any word from the Major?”

Damon shook his head wordlessly. If there was one thing that could get him to shut up it was the thought of something bad happening to the Major.

Remy chased off one of Damon’s minions and commandeered the computer to get started on his work. He would have only been called in to look at the data coming in from the interceptor devices that the Major, Stephen, and Lado had placed. “Did they get all the interceptors installed?”

Damon returned his gaze to the big screens. “That’s why I brought you in. We need to figure that.”

Remy typed in his security code to unlock the terminal and brought up several apps. “Okay. I’ll let you know as soon as I find out.”

Stephen’s voice interjected into their discussion. “Unity, did you copy my CASEVAC request?”

Damon held up a finger and pinched the transmit button of the little box repeater on his belt. “Bravo 301, we copy your request and need to gain approval before launching a CASEVAC mission.”

Damon then leaned forward to the staffer sitting at the terminal beside Remy. “Have we gotten that approval yet?”

That got a swift shake of the head in response. “No, sir. We haven’t heard back from the general yet. I’ll let you know as soon as I have a response.”

Another voice jumped onto the line then.
